GILMER, TEXAS

Gilmer, Texas is located in Upshur County.

During Upshur County's 2016 Presidential Election 82.5% voted Republican, 14.9% voted Democrat, and 2.7% voted for other candidates.

During the 2018 Republican Party Primary, voters had the opportunity to vote on proposition #7. This proposition gave voters the chance to voice their opinion if they were "In Favor" or "Against" this following statement: " I believe abortion should be abolished in Texas." In Upshur County, out of 4,940 votes, 3,935 voted in favor of the idea of abolishing abortion in the state of Texas and 1,005 voted against the idea abolishing abortion in the state of Texas.

The population of the city of Gilmer, Texas is 5,216.

On September 24th, 2019 the City Council of Gilmer voted on a Sanctuary City for the Unborn ordinance. The vote was 4-1 in favor of passing the ordinance. There were two council members that were not present for the vote.

Unlike the ordinances passed in the first five cities, the Gilmer Ordinance does not ban the sale and distribution of “emergency contraception.”  Because of this these products that can cause an abortion are still on the shelves of businesses within the city and some types of abortion services could still exist within the city limits. This is a great concern to us and a reminder that the fight to end all abortions in Gilmer, Texas is far from over. The ordinance does, however, prevent surgical and medical abortion clinics from moving into the city and setting up shop.

In taking this action the City of Gilmer became the sixth city to outlaw surgical and medical abortions in the nation.
